What is the FAFSA and what does it make me eligible for?
The Federal Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) is a form provided by United States Department of Education and is designed to ensure that all eligible individuals benefit from federal funding. This application is used by many college institutions including NMSU as a way to determine the need status of a student. This form needs to be updated yearly if you wish to continue receiving federal funding . The application will require income tax information from you and your parents to complete.
The FAFSA information will be used in the following types of Financial Aid:
- Grants (Leap, Pell, Etc) are a federally funded form of aid that is based on your need and do not have to be repaid.
- Student Loans (Stafford, etc) a form of aid typically processed through banking institutions that must be repaid usually with interest.
- Work-study funds are a highly valuable commodity. If you plan to work on campus, this is a necessity, as there are many employers that will only hire students with work-study funds. The value for the student is flexible work schedules and employment that is related to their major. The value for the employer is that work-study pays part of the student’s salary and it makes it easier to hire more students.
- Need based scholarships occur in both the university and the college scholarship programs. A certain percent of the scholarship funds available require the student must have financial need and that value is obtained from the FAFSA.

All college scholarships are tied to specific criteria including GPA, major, etc. Any actions made by the student that make them no longer eligible for that scholarship will be revoked.
Back to topHow do I get outside scholarships to pay my NMSU Expenses?
Many towns, companies and organizations give scholarships to students. If you receive any of these types of scholarships please notify the donor once you have made a decision on which institution you wish to attend and when you will graduate. They should get in direct contact with the financial aid office 505-646-4105 at least one month before classes begin in order to have your scholarship show up on time or they can give you a check directly according to their awarding bylaws.
